Module 1: What are the problems that arise from too much screen time?

  • What is screen dependency's impact on your child's communication?  

  • A look at the physical, mental and social issues that are linked directly to unsupervised screen time:

    • Obesity 

    • Irregular sleep schedule 

    • Behavioral issues 

    • Lack / loss of social skills 

    • Violence 

    • Less time and lack of appreciation for play 

  • What is the difference between active and passive screen time? 

  • Why is playtime more important to children than screen time? 

  • What is the outcome of screen dependency to relationships between the children and their parents / guardians? 

Module  2

Module 2 – How to manage your child's screen time

  • How do you make sure that you providing your child with quality screen time?
  • The importance of previewing the program, games or app before allowing the child to view or play

  • What does true interactivity look like on a screen?

  • How to utilise parental lock/controls to filter content

  • Why making sure that your child is within your reach for supervised screen time is important 

  • How best to engage with your child during his/her screen time 

  • The importance of differentiating between content and ads and why this especially matters for children

  • How to eliminate ads or control ads from your children’s screen time

Module  3

Module 3 – Encouraging your children to be digitally literate

  • How do you explain to children the difference between screen life and real life?  

  • How to engage with children to discuss what they have seen on their screens? 

  • What are the best practices for encouraging a child to engage in critical thinking about0 what they have seen on their screens? 

  • How to make sure the child understands, interacts and acknowledges the different viewpoints made in the content from their screens? 

Module  4

Module 4 – Setting the limits for older children

  • How do you prioritize real play-time with an emphasis communication, cognitive and sensory activities? 

  • A look at the importance of tech-free zones and how do you create them? 

    • Requiring children to charge their devices outside their rooms

    • Making sure that there are no screens inside the children’s room

    • and other parental/guardian tips and tricks 

  • How do you set and enforce screen time limits similar to a curfew? 

  • What apps should parents / guardians be considering to help control devices?  

  • Leading by example: the importance of limiting your own screen time and to cut down on screen background noise 

Module  5

Module 5 – Teaching appropriate behaviors to teens

  • Explain what is allowed and not allowed when using screens for communication (i.e. cyber-bullying, sharing of personal information, sexting) and showing them potential consequences of their actions 

  • Making sure that teens understand that whatever they put online will be made available to all and always available (forever!) 

  • How do you monitor your teen’s screen time in an uninstructive way?  

  • What is the appropriate reaction to a teen’s transgressions on the internet?
